Development of a flow-through system for the study of toxicity and bioaccumulation processes in aquatic invertebrates OMA
Blust, R.; Decleir, W..
A flow-through test system for the study of toxicity and bioaccumulation processes is described. The apparatus can operate within a very wide range of flow rates. Flow deviations are less than 2% and the variation in test-agent concentration, (determined for copper) ranges from 3 to 8%. As a practical test a copper-toxicity experiment on adult Artemia was carried out and the results compared with data obtained from a similar but static assay. The results indicate that: - bioassay and accumulation experiments must preferably be carried out under flow-through conditions to keep the concentration and bioavailability of the toxicant as constant as possible;- the data analysis must be based upon measured test-solution toxicant-concentrations...

Early gametogenesis in the Pacific oyster: new insights using stem cell and mitotic markers ArchiMer
Cavelier, Patricia; Cau, Julien; Morin, Nathalie; Delsert, Claude.
While our knowledge of bivalve gametogenesis has progressed in recent times, more molecular markers are needed in order to develop tissue imaging. Here, we identified stem cell and mitotic markers to further characterize oyster early gametogenesis, mainly through immunofluorescence microscopy. Intense alkaline phosphatase activity, a non-specific marker for stem cells, was detected on the outer edge of the gonad ducts at the post-spawning stage, suggesting an abundance of undifferentiated cells very early during the sexual cycle. This observation was confirmed using an antibody against Sox2, a transcription factor specific for stem or germline cells, which labeled cells in the gonad duct inner mass and ciliated epithelium early during the initial oyster...

Ciguatera poisoning in French Polynesia: insights into the novel trends of an ancient disease ArchiMer
Chinain, M.; Gatti, C.m.; Roué, M.; Darius, H.t..
Ciguatera is a non-bacterial seafood poisoning highly prevalent in French Polynesia where it constitutes a major health issue and a major threat to food sustainability and food security for local populations. Ciguatera results from the bioaccumulation in marine food webs of toxins known as ciguatoxins, originating from benthic dinoflagellates in the genera Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa. Ciguatera is characterized by a complex array of gastrointestinal, neurological and cardiovascular symptoms. The effective management of patients is significantly hampered by the occurrence of atypical forms and/or chronic sequelae in some patients, and the lack of both a confirmatory diagnosis test and a specific antidote. In addition, recent findings have outlined the...

Brood care in Brachyuran crabs: the effect of oxygen provision on reproductive costs RChHN
FERNÁNDEZ,MIRIAM; BRANTE,ANTONIO.
The quantification of the costs associated with parental care of marine invertebrates requires a first and necessary step, which is the identification of the different forms of care exhibited by this group. Among marine invertebrates, provision of oxygen to the aggregation of embryos may be critical, although most evidence on the link between oxygen limitation and parental care is indirect. Species which show active behavior directed at providing oxygen to the brood offer a good model to establish the direct link between behavioural patterns and oxygen provision to the embryos, and to estimate the costs associated with this form of care. In this manuscript, we conducted a review of the current knowledge about oxygen limitation in embryos aggregations of...

Marine invertebrate fauna of the Chausey archipelago: an annotated checklist of historical data from 1828 to 2008 ArchiMer
Godet, Laurent; Le Mao, Patrick; Grant, Cindy; Olivier, Frederic.
The first updated list of the marine invertebrate fauna of the Chausey archipelago (Normand-Breton Gulf, France) is presented. All publications regarding the natural history of the area, as well as the existing collections of marine invertebrates from 1828 to 2008 were examined. A total of 769 species (including 245 Arthropoda, 197 Mollusca, 146 Polychaeta), have been recorded in this area covering 5000 ha. This species richness is largely the result of the complexity of benthic habitatsof the archipelago and its long history of field work, dating back to the 19(th) Century. The historical data set of this region presents an opportunity to assess long-term changes in nearshore communities and to design conservation sites based on their scientific value.

Native species exploited by marine aquarium trade in Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gurjão,Lívio Moreira de; Lotufo,Tito Monteiro da Cruz.
Abstract: Brazil has an important role in marine ornamental trade, exploiting native species for both international and domestic market. A few works have previously assessed wild species exploited by the Brazilian marine aquarium industry and most of them focused solely on fish. Hence, the present paper intends to address an information gap regarding the species currently traded in the country, as well as concerning their conservation statuses. Thus, different sources of information were investigated and each species was categorized in accordance with existing lists of threatened species. A wide variety of native species was identified in Brazilian marine aquarium trade, including not only fish but also invertebrates, seaweeds and macrophytes. Some of...

Adult somatic progenitor cells and hematopoiesis in oysters ArchiMer
Jemaa, Mohamed; Morin, Nathalie; Cavelier, Patricia; Cau, Julien; Strub, Jean Marc; Delsert, Claude.
Long-lived animals show a non-observable age-related decline in immune defense, which is provided by blood cells that derive from self-renewing stem cells. The oldest living animals are bivalves. Yet, the origin of hemocytes, the cells involved in innate immunity, is unknown in bivalves and current knowledge about mollusk adult somatic stem cells is scarce. Here we identify a population of adult somatic precursor cells and show their differentiation into hemocytes. Oyster gill contains an as yet unreported irregularly folded structure (IFS) with stem-like cells bathing into the hemolymph. BrdU labeling revealed that the stem-like cells in the gill epithelium and in the nearby hemolymph replicate DNA. Proliferation of this cell population was further...

The role of astaxanthin in shrimp pigmentation ArchiMer
Latscha, T.
Carotenoids are exogenously derived isoprenoid compounds which are responsible for pigmentation in crustaceans. While implants and bacteria are able to synthesize these carotenoids de novo, shrimps like other animals entirely depend on their dietary supply. The major carotenoid found in most crustacean tissues and responsible, e.g. for the typical colour of penaeids is astaxanthin. With increasing industrialization in shrimp farming there is a growing demand for synthetic, nature-identical carotenoids, not only for pigmentation, but also for the maintenance of growth and fertility.

Nocturnal feeding under artificial light conditions by Brown-Hooded Gull (Larus Maculipennis) in Puerto Madryn harbour (Chubut province, Argentina) Hornero
Leopold,Mardik F.; Philippart,Catharina J. M.; Yorio,Pablo.
This paper describes nocturnal, marine feeding behaviour in the Brown-hooded Gull (Larus maculipennis) in November 2009. The gulls assembled at night at the end of a long pier, running 800 m offshore into the Golfo Nuevo, at Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province, Argentina. Powerful lights predictably lighted the water around the end of the pier and attracted many small prey animals to the surface. Several hundreds of gulls, presumed to be local breeders, came every night to feed on this bounty, using various feeding techniques and taking several prey species and sizes. Potential prey items were caught to be identified by vertical plankton hauls. The gulls most likely took relatively large Isopoda (Idothea sp.), Polychaeta (Platynereis sp.) and fish larvae...

The first finding of Ostrea cf. puelchana (Bivalvia) living as epibiont on Callinectes exasperates (Decapoda) Biological Sciences
Lima, Silvio Felipe Barbosa; Lucena, Rudá Amorim; Queiroz, Vinicius; Guimarães, Carmen Regina Parisotto; Breves, André.
This paper describes the epibiosis of Ostrea cf. puelchana on Callinectes exasperatus (Gerstaecker, 1856), both collected from the estuary of the Paraíba River, in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. The basibiont crab was captured using a trap installed in mangrove area at a depth of about 2 meters. The oyster was closely attached to the left side of dorsal carapace covering most of the epibranchial, mesobranchial and metabranchial regions. Possible advantages and disadvantages for both the epibiont and the basibiont are discussed. We believe that young O. cf. puelchana may avoid a variety of potential predators due to the considerable movement capacity of C. exasperatus and may also serve as a small protective shield for the basibiont. However,...

Sessile and sedentary macrofauna from the Pirapama Shipwreck, Pernambuco, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lira,Simone Maria de Albuquerque; Farrapeira,Cristiane Maria Rocha; Amaral,Fernanda Maria Duarte; Ramos,Carla Alecrim Colaço.
Shipwrecks are considered artificial reef environments - structures immersed in aquatic environments (especially marine ones) that provide fauna with shelter, hard substrates, food and nursery areas. This study aimed to survey the benthic animal biodiversity of the Pirapama shipwreck, located 23 m deep and six miles off Recife harbor. From 2001 to 2007, species were observed, photographed and collected through scuba diving. The material was later sorted and identified in the laboratory. A total of 76 sessile and sedentary animal taxa were recorded belonging to the following phyla: Porifera (Demospongiae and Calcarea), Cnidaria (Hydrozoa and Anthozoa), Mollusca (Bivalvia and Gastropoda), Annelida (Polychaeta), Arthropoda (Cirripedia), Bryozoa...
